In a recently released trailer, Konami has revealed the release date for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, a bundle that contains 13 classic titles from the beloved beat ’em up series. The collection will launch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) on August 30.
For those unaware, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an American media franchise created by comic book authors Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It follows the adventures of four anthropomorphic turtle brothers, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, who fight evil in New York city using Ninjutsu. A long list of TMNT video games have been developed, mainly by Konami, based on the use of the turtles’ powers and friends. These have tended to action and beat ’em up projects. Many of them were based on the TV shows and movies that aired from 1978 until 2007.
The Cowabunga Collection does not only compile the original games in one package but adds many quality of life changes, including online play and couch co-op play for certain titles. Other features include save state and rewind features, button mapping, unique arts and sketches, historical content, and 11 Japanese regional versions of the games, never before released in the West. The games are brought back from various consoles like the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, and Arcade machines.
The recently released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge has been a massive success for the franchise. It borrowed many stylistic choices from Konami’s arcade machines and also the home console games. The voice actors from the 1987 series also came back to reprise their roles. The title sold 1 million copies in its first week and paved the way for more titles to be released for fans of the game’s pixellated art style.
